Motorsports Event - Free Practice!

Post by Mike Simanyi »

Everybody! Everybody! (Does anyone get the reference?)

The Motorsports Z Event at El Toro on April 25th is rapidly approaching, and our tie-in with the event allows us to offer a free practice on Sunday, April 26th for everyone who works a two-hour session on Saturday.

I'm breaking the day up into 4 Saturday sessions:

8:30 - 10:30am
10:30 - 12:30pm
1:00 - 3:00pm
3:00 - 5:00 pm

Please e-mail me directly - mikes at newport acceptance dot c0m - to sign up for your preferred session. I'm looking for 20 volunteers per session, and you should plan to check in 20 minutes before your session is scheduled to begin. Be sure to allow an extra 10 minutes travel time to get from the front gate to Worker Check-in.

For the Sunday practice, I plan to set up a separate practice slalom area, 8 or 9 cones in length. I'll personally provide instruction at the station and will coordinate a couple other instructors as well. This is a skill that you can dramatically improve with a dedicated practice station!

And as a little more icing on the cake, some El Toro videos for you from the PSCC event on March 1st:

http://www.vimeo.com/3495193" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I hope to see you out there!

I also need four volunteers to arrive at 6:15 and help with course / grid / pit / tech setup. To qualify for this, you should have participated recently in a Championship and have a good sense of the scale of a course. Ian Stewart is designing the course for us and we'll fine tune after the preliminary setup is physically in place, so a little recent time on course is quite helpful.

And as a further note, this is the best event of the year for your friends to try autox. It'll never be less expensive - they only have to buy a weekend SCCA membership - and the practice is extremely casual since it doesn't precede a Championship.

I don't think you got the real point across Mike....

Basically, you're being paid $30 per hour TAX FREE to watch a bunch of cool classic Z cars have their once a year thrashing and as a bonus you don't have to bribe the registration chief with naked shower pics of your hot sister to get into the practice.

As registration chief, I advise you only to listen to the first part of Steve's message!

Thanks Steve, you're right. This event is a blast for a number of reasons.

I'm kinda hoping we see the Pomana FSAE car running on Sunday, but it may be a bit early in their season.

See lots of familiar names here. It's been 2+ years since my last event, since I moved cross country for a bit. It's time to play again!

I still have openings in each work group on Saturday. I'll give it a couple more days then post in the S.D. forums so our friends from the south can join us too.

This is a fun event folks - send me your entry e-mail! I've responded to every e-mail I've received, so if you don't have a response from me please don't assume you're in. Perhaps something was caught in a spam filter, so try again or PM me through the board.

Not quite, but you're on the right track. We found this one day reviewing creative web interfaces. Your kids should love it:

Small update: I have spots open in the 10:30 - 12:30, 1:00 - 3:00 and 3:00 - 5:00 sessions. Once we fill those, or if I have any dropouts, I'll start distributing volunteers into all four work sessions including the 8:30 - 10:30 group.

Signed up! This is the best deal out there.

Will this event have the slalom and figure 8 sections like the Team Blew practice put on? That was an extremely beneficial and super fun part of that Saturday's practice event. And the best part was that they almost seemed to run themselves since drivers where responsible for picking up their own cones. It would be awesome to regularly incorporate these types of sections in our El Toro practices. My slalom technique could definitely use the added seat time.

If the organizers want it, Karen & I could set it up again. We would need to coordinate with the event. I think it might be nice to have it Sat already. Perhaps the workers could also use it on Sat., but that would involve Teching the worker's cars also.

That would be awesome Mako! I'm sure many would be happy with the addition just on Sunday as most can understand the added hassle in the tech area if implemented on Saturday. I hope the organizers will consider!

While there may be a slight chance of us running on Saturday, that is not to be expected. And not sure we have enough workers to do a separate course. Remember, the Z people do not work, they just run.

Right ... but only one worker is required to run each of the Bonus Elements.

But yeah ... typically everyone gets a LOT of runs on Sunday which might make the extra Figure 8 and Slalom redundant.

If even that. I helped pick up my own cones last time. Gives me all the more reason to not hit 'em :)
