FSAE Volunteer Practice (June 21) is Canceled

Post by George Schilling »

That's the bad news. (Unless you want to spend Father's Day at home with your family)

The good news is that FSAE volunteers have not been forgotten. In addition to the food, the free shirt, the unlimited access to the pit and competition areas, the fun, the camaraderie, and the gratitude of the entire FSAE staff and competitors from around the world, FSAE volunteers will also receive $45 in Solo $ to be used at any of our CSCC local championships or practices.

For those volunteers who are local points card holders, the Solo $ will be automatically credited to your account. For those of you who are not regulars in our autox community but who volunteered through our system and would like to experience autox'ing first hand, just request your solo $ from one of the event officials. To redeem your award, just mention you have solo $ on account you'd like to have applied to you entry. That's all there is too it.

Like all of you, I'm excited about the upcoming FSAE competition. I'll be looking forward to seeing all of you there.

All FSAE volunteers that would like to recieve Solo$ and are NOT points card holders, can apply for their Solo$ by emailing/pm'ing me through this website or putting their name on a sign up sheet that I will have at the event.

Non-Points card holders:
I will be collecting names for Solo$ until Sat June 27th - 1 week after the competition. After that, no requests for FSAE volunteer solo$ will be accepted.

Oh, and Thank you for volunteering! :gpower:

Steve,

I wish I had an answer to your question, but I was asked to focus on the competition support and preparation rather than the practice planning. As a result, I was not involved in the discussions or the decision concerning the practice, so I don't know the details, but I'm sure the e-board had good reason...

This is not to say that a practice on the infield isn't an option in the future, it will just require more organizational support and early action to make it happen IMO...

Thankfully we did have the foresight to line up solobucks as a contingency for this occurrence :ibrightdea: and we are significantly more prepared for the event this year so it should make for a really fun experience.

AND….. not to jinx it, but the extended forecast is calling for highs in the mid 80 deg temps in Fontana for the 20th!!

I'm really looking forward to being a part of our role in the competition as we have the same great bunch of people in the key positions and a good mix of familiar and new names on the volunteer list which always tends to make things run smoothly.

Also, I tried to make improvements to the track layout, one of which is general visibility so even if you aren’t on the track, you will still have a front row seat…

If anyone has questions about the Saturday Endurance event, respond on the thread of the same name or track me down this weekend as I will be at the practice all Saturday and the championship at least through lunch on Sunday….

See you at the track!!

Several people asked me why the event was canceled over the weekend. Reading George's original post, I guess it isn't entirely clear, so I wanted to put a note here to clear up the questions/rumors. It is actually pretty simple - the course area on which the practice was to held is too small to meet the guidelines related to run-off areas. There simply wasn't enough room to put elements on the course without getting too close to the edge of the pavement or some solid object, like a building. If we were to run an event and have an incident on a course that didn't meet our guidelines, the insurance company could fight and potentially deny any claims. If that happens, the officers of the corporation (socal solo II operates in corporate form) and possibly the directors (that would be the board and club reps) could be personally liable for any claims.

Once we became aware of the course size, the Board decided that we could not run the event.
