I'm trying to build a website for myself (I know basically nothing) and had a couple of questions:
How should I embed video? Some of it is .mpeg-4 from ChaseCam stuff and some would be of the super slo-mo stuff that Mako shot - don't know what the format is.
How wide and tall should I make the pages?
I'm using MS Office 2007 Publisher, btw.
TIA
Bill

Re: Hey, website builder wizards!
Upload it to a site like Youtube that allows you to embed the video into your page. They even handle the optimization and transcoding, so you don't have to. And they give you the embedding code.
http://www.chasecam.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; VIDEO + DATA

And the quality will be good enough? Otherwise, will it use up a lot/too much of space on the server whatever fool decides to host my site? ;)
Any idea of page width and height?
Thanks Randy!
And congrats on that new HD/3D Hollywood studio gig!!! When you gonna get me a job there? lol

Re: Hey, website builder wizards!
Most people have a 1280x1024 screen now. It all depends on how backward compatible you want to be (people used to design for 640x480 screens, but that is ancient now).
If it's just for fun & you don't care about things like maximizing Google results, having a much more dynamic/flexible site that will look good on all browsers (not just built for a certain width/height), then I'd go with the 1280x1024 standard, i.e. make sure the web site still looks good @ 1000px or maybe a lil less.
A lot of sites are built to support all sorts of resolutions, i.e. anything from 800x600 -> 1920x1200, etc; notice how this site's forum software will take up the entire browser screen, for example.
Otherwise, I'd strongly recommend against using Publisher, Word, or any other Microsoft product for building a web site - they are all notoriously horrible in terms of cross browser compatibility, code size, and w3c compliance, etc.
I'd recommend something like Dreamweaver - still easy to use, but much cleaner; or if you are on a budget or feeling frisky, do it by hand in Notepad or TextPad or Crimson Editor (my personal favorite).
The YouTube embedded code will waste none of your bandwidth - you just link to the youtube & it will play on your site. The quality all depends on the type of file you upload. Most look very nice.
You can also embed your own, but you will want to purchase some software to make your life easier - I personally do Flash Video Embedder (comes w/ Adobe Flash) to convert files to a Flash format & use some free open source software to load and play the video. This way, everything is on my site.
I actually just took a refresher/back-to-basics course for fun over the summer, I found http://www.htmldog.com/ to be very useful.

a full website?
whats your goal with the site....
personal information, car updates?
let us know...you may find that a blog may be better suited for what you need, and its much easier to update and keep looking fresh then a full blown site..
here is our team site... http://yeohbaby.blogspot.com
