Bad Video Sound

Post by Kurt Rahn »

Does anyone using a GoPro Motorsports Hero Wide have any suggestions for getting better sound when using their camera for in-car video? I've done some tests using the "hi" and "lo" settings, both inside and out of the car, as well as with the rubber gasket in the camera case installed and not. During my tests, it seemed like the best sound (wind noise wasn't too bad but could still hear the eigine) was with the camera inside the car, the "hi" setting on and the gasket installed. However, when I ran that setup this weekend, I couldn't hear the engine at all except for the start and the backside slalom where I almost hit the rev limiter, and the wind noise was pretty bad.

Anyone have any suggestions? Leonard, I know you use (or at least used to) use a Hero. Your in-car video sounds really good, despite the fact that you run with the top down, which would seem to increase the wind noise. What are you doing?

I'm not running a Hero - running a Canon SD500 digital compact camera on a ChaseCam mount. Use to run a Canon A740 (if I remember the model number correctly). Not the most ideal setup, but it's been getting the job done for a year now.

You can't put a microphone in the wind and not have it overpower the ambient engine noise.

But the wind noise is still louder than the ambient engine noise (unless this is a NASCAR or F1 car!) and the more you muffle the wind noise (insulate it) the more you will remove the engine noise too.

The solution is an external microphone our mount the recording device out of the wind... or use a cool soundtrack by U2 to cover it up. :)

That would be ideal, but at this point, it's either a ChaseCam or building my car to be competitive. I think I'd rather run near the front first. Maybe, when I've spent all the money on the car, I'll be able to afford a good cam setup. Rented one at Evo school and it was awesome!
