DIY Turn off Map Lights on Z06 ?!

Post by Mako Koiwai »

Can't find anything in the Owners Manual how to turn off the Map Lights built into the Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror ? There are buttons for each one, but they aren't doing anything ?!

Tried "everything" last night. Batteries dead this morning, although Brian thought the battery might be on it's last legs. Didn't think the cool LED's would use up that much power ...

Thanks ... but ours are oem, so I don't think that thread applied.

This is like the parking lights on the Suby's that people accidentally turn on when they wipe down their instrument pod and hit the little switch on the steering wheel pod. You can't typically see it so some people don't even know it's there. They can't figure out why those lights came on ...

Sounds like your battery was shot as it should have turned all lights off by itself according to this...
But there is a button on the dash to turn the interior lights on/off and I think that includes the map lights...

http://www.c6registry.com/Technical/2002corvette.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

page 2-53 onwards...
Interior Lamps

Instrument Panel Brightness Control
This feature controls the brightness of the instrument
panel lights.
The knob for this feature is
located on the left side of
the instrument panel.
Push and release the knob and it will pop out.
Turn the knob clockwise to brighten the lights or
counterclockwise to dim them.
...

Courtesy Lamps
When any door or the hatch/trunk lid is opened, the
interior lamps will go on (unless it’s bright outside).
You can also turn on the courtesy lamps by turning the
instrument panel brightness knob all the way clockwise.
...

Inadvertent Load Control
Your vehicle has a feature to help prevent you from
draining the battery in case the underhood lamp, vanity
mirror lamps, cargo lamps, reading lamps, console or
glove box lamps are accidentally left on. If you leave
any of these lamps on, they will automatically time
out after about 15 minutes. To reset it, all of the
above lamps must be turned off or the ignition key
must be in ON.
...

Electrochromic Day/Night Inside Rearview
Mirror with Map Lamps (Option)
...
The mirror includes two map lamps and an automatic
dimming function. There is also an interior console
flood lamp located underneath the rearview mirror
which remains on at all times.

Push and release the knob and it will pop out.
Make sure you don't accidently bump this knob and leave it out. Make sure you push it back in after use. Don't ask how I know

I did not think it made a difference on a C5 if it is in or out, and that just the clockwise-counterclockwise setting mattered?

Left button (on mirror)turns left light on/off, right button(on mirror)turns right light on/off. If they don't "do anything" either a) fuse blown or b) bulbs are burnt out. Or I suppose both switches are broken. Middle (dim) light stays on when lights are on to illuminate shifter, cup holder etc.

Standard wet cell batteries, if that is what you have, when subjected to the heat/vibration/bouncing of "race" use have a shortened life. You "probably" just have a borderline battery.

It does not matter if you leave it in or out, you are correct. It only matters if it is twisted all the way past brighten to the LEAVE IT ON & KILL MY BATTERY positiion.

So the "Inadvertent Load Control" does not shut it off after 15 minutes?

I am not sure, don't have the patience to test it.

I had some deal like that on my 02 Suburban and left an inverter plugged into a rear 12v outlet & it sure killed the battery on the Suburban.

I was thinking the ILC might just be for headlights but I really don't know.

So it looks like that Push In/Pop Out dashboard illum level somehow got dialed up all the way to the Brightest/Cabin Lights On position.

I don't know why the Auto Battery Saver feature that is suppose to turn EVERYTHING off after 15 minutes didn't work, unless the battery was dead before the 15 minutes were up?

The battery was so dead that the Smart Charger that I left charging the battery all day didn't work. When I got home the Red Light was flashing indicating that it wasn't charging. I jumped started the car with our portable starter and drove it around a bit. Now the charger seems to be working. But yah ... the battery most likely needs to be replaced. I wonder if Costco carries the right size/spec battery ?

Now is the time for super cool ASP battery!!!

The battery was toast, no juice to shut off lighting left on. I pull all lamps just for this reason,
and bring lots of flashlights....

Yes Costco does. It is pretty common.

Plan on replacing that battery every 2 years though if you autox.

Call your local Costco first to see if they have it in stock, their selection is not what it used to be. The moved the batteries to the Tire dept.

I just replaced the Integra battery purchased at Costco years ago.... working from my home outward Azusa, Alhambra, San Dimas, Montebello, Glendale, Chino Hills, City of Commerce, Burbank, did not carry my size.... had to drive to Van Nuys in get a group ?? my car takes.

Oh, and even though the Jetta's was under warranty and only a year old... all Costco locations (discontinued in the computer) stopped carrying that size, and had to give me a full refund... boy other sources are MUCH more expensive than Costco.

Picked up the replacement battery at Van Nuys Costco on the way home from work ... $57 ... Nice!

Here is an example of how screwed up american car companies are. No where in the Owners Manual does it tell you what type of replacement battery to buy. They suggest you get in touch with your local GM dealer/parts department, OR, buy the Workshop Manual for $120 ... to find out what battery to get !!! ... luckily we have the three volume, 1,000+ page tome. Thanks Brian!

I hope u did not get a side terminal batt. I think 01-03 had side term as oem, my 04 had top terminal. Lot's of bad history with side term batt. The one on my 02 suburban took out a lot of stuff when it sprung a leak.

Just keep checking it every so often, for leaks, & the terminals get loose (but don't overtighten either)

Should be fine if you check it. Part of regular maint.
