How Often Oil Change for AX Cars ?

Post by Mako Koiwai »

The Z06 oil readout is saying 40%. Oil still looks nice and clear. How often should we change our oil on a pretty much AX only car?

Any special oil filter?

As often as the oil analysis place tells you you need to.. or once or twice a season.

Our C5 is strickly an autocross car. I change oil when the computer tells me to which is usually around 7000 miles and I've used only the GM oil filter.

oil analysis is the correct answer. we change the oil in the evo about every 3 months but we're a lot harder on oil than most people.

I can't wait to be hard on our car's oil. :D (I guess you mean because it's a turbo?)

I've used oil analysis a couple of times with the old WRX. It always showed things to be OK. I was disappointed that it didn't come with say "recommendations," for those of use that weren't Chemical Engineers. :?

Can you recommend an oil analyzing biz that offers interpretations of the results?

I'll say this, my dad had a 93 Vette, not once in it's life was the oil severely discolored or otherwise tarnished from use. Dad used to do every 3k, if you autoX I might do it once every 3 months /<3k. Miata gets that kind of treatment.

I go to about 30 to 25 % life & on mine it works out to 4500 to 6k miles.

It's darker but not black when I dump it down the storm drain, just kidding!!!!!

:)

p46 stock filter is good, small but good flow & has as much sq inch of filtration as older bigger ones.

FWIW - several years ago Consumer Reports tackled this subject and used New York City taxi cabs for test beds. The thinking was that no street driven car would see more abuse than those cabs. They did engine tear downs at varying intervals to check the obvious wear areas and so on. The conclusion was that for any car not being driven in extreme conditions (continous dust, pulling heavy loads, etc.) that 7500 miles between oil changes was sufficient. My recollection is they also said once year if you don't reach the mileage.

I just picked up the Mini yesterday, and they said the first oil change was at 1 year regardless of mileage (!?!). Maybe because they offer free maintenance for 3 yrs? Does that seem extreme to anyone else?

I think i would go with the typical change at 1500 with normal miles throughout the rev range.

Blackstone tells you about anything abnormal, how many more miles to go before re-sampling.

Is there a mop in the sample collection kit?

Yeah, Mike, this incident is going to get a lot of play :gpower:

(But we hope the damage isn't as complete as it might be and that you get it back up and running soon).

No, but I *highly* recommend if you plan to attempt High Speed Oil Changes, you be prepared for the hard part: adding oil at speed.

About once a year (about ~2-2,500 miles. The odometer on My Lotus just went over 8,000 miles over the weekend--using 5W-40 wt synthetic)
