Wet Settings ...

Post by Mako Koiwai »

We know that it's better to have a softly sprung race car in slippery conditions ... which can mean not stiffening up ones shocks, ie. leave them on the street settings. At some point one might want to disconnect ones sway bars.

What about alignment settings?

On the Vette we change toe when we go to our R tires. Toe in up front, toe out in back. How does rain slick asphalt effect what one does with ones alignment?

(Don't believe everything you read on the net. ;) )

I typically do not touch much on the car when there is rain/wet pavement other than running my shock rebound as soft as allowed.

Toe in (rear) should keep the car stable. If it were me I wouldn't bother messing with the car and just try to focus more on the driving.

At the '08 ProFinale it deluged for the about the whole damn thing. Second day I disconnected my rear sway. Tightened up the car a little bit which was obviously needed, but slowed it down because now I couldn't even look at the throttle. Inside wheelspin off idle with even the most subtle turning, it was hopeless.

Obviously, this is for a FWD car with no limited slip.

How about tire pressures?

Does this seem reasonable?
Tire Rack wrote:TIRE PRESSURES IN THE RAIN

For both autocross and road racing, increase tire pressures 6-10 psi from what you would normally run in dry conditions. Hydroplaning occurs when a wedge of water develops between the tire and road surface. This wedge can actually lift the tire off the road and eliminate traction. Increasing the pressure rounds the profile of the tire by decreasing the deflection of the tire. This results in a smaller contact patch - narrower and shorter. It also helps keep the grooves in the tread open so they can channel the water out from under the tire.
