The one that got away.

Post by Steve Abbott »

I'm sure some of you will find this funny, but I'm not laughing.
Going into the last race I had a 60 pt. lead. (numbers are approx.) Tom D. unfortunately couldn't make it to the last race. So standing in my driveway looking at my wife's SS legal Corvette and my ASP Corvette, I decided to take my car and enter CSM. It's more fun and Karen would have to unload all of her stuff from inside. Besides if Tom is not going then my 60 pt. lead is final. Well that's what you would think, right? It turns out, you better know this points system inside and out. Tom's lowest points for the 3 drops before the last event was a 85,0,79. Because he didn't show up on the last event, his lowest points after the last race is now. 0,79,0. He gains 85 pts. by not showing up and I lose. :cry: I never saw it coming.

Yeah, i've found it's only final if you do the math and you'd still win if they showed up and got 100 points and you didn't and got 0.

Happened to me too! My lead over Michael Bradley was only 9 points, I miss calculated and thought I just had to show up and get the jacket. Turns out I needed to be within 1 sec to maintain my lead. Instead I drove Karens Zatermans Z06 on a wet surface and lost by 3 secs and the jacket. I did get a time good enough to beat Micheal on Karens instructor run, one run too late.

Steve,
That sucks! I'm still confused about the points thing myself. So, if you had raced in ASP in the last event would you have won?

Now that's funny George. I bet if I was with GRA at the time, they would have pointed out my error of my way and let me borrow one of their Fast SS Corvettes.

All I had to do was show up in my Wife's SS Corvette and run 1 lap at any pace I wanted. I ran SS all year.

Yeah, are you sure he "couldn't make it to the last race" OR was it a plot to throw you off the points chase... }:)
I guess you can look at it as being nice to your co-driver/car-owner and letting him win... :D

The same thing kind of happened to me. I beat Theo by what I thought was enough to make up the nine points I needed to win STX, but when the drops came into play it didn't make a difference :shock:
Congrats Theo, hopefully next years battle will be as good as this years was :thumbup:

Yep, we have some funny points rules. Jon clinched FjA at the thanksgiving event, the one he skipped! He was glad the other kids showed up in November making FjA a "class" for the year allowing him to run F125 in December.

Thanks Matt! You fought a good fight :thumbup: Still trying to recover from the significant beating you served me at the last event :( Racing on bald tires sucks.

I know what you mean. A few years ago, I beat someone else every event (even won most of the events that year), but they were right on my tail. They no-showed one event, while an out of town-er spanked me. I used all my drops for missed events, so did the other person. They beat me in year end points, even though they never beat me once on the track. That's one thing I don't like about our formula. If we used one like S.D. and most other regions, it wouldn't have happened. I've always wondered why we have this strange formula.

Note that the one in four wording in 7.6 is incorrect. Refer to Appendix D only.

I think Mr. Abbot asked about how they do it in SD... something that I am curious about too... I looked at their web site and forum but did not find any info on how they calculate points...

It was designed to reward consistency since you get more points for being closer to the winner, rather than a fixed number of points based on position. So someone who was always in 2nd just behind several different class winners would be rewarded with an overall year end win. The original version (which came from way before we were an SCCA region) based the winning time on the highest placing points card holder, but was changed to class winning time, points card holder or not, a number of years ago. The highest placing points card holder no longer automatically gets 100, but the points relationship between people is still the same. I forget what brought about the change.

It does occasionally happen as you describe. Happened to me, though I was the 2nd place person at the time. My co-driver consistently won, but at the end I edged him out. Didn't sit right with me so since I was the one responsible for getting the jackets make, I had his name put on the jacket and when my name was called as the class winner, I handed it over to him instead. Just seemed the right thing to do.

Our region. I don't understand Steve E. comment. 100-400?

Should be another set of parenthesis to make it clear the order of operations:

Driver’s Points = 100 – (400 [(Drivers Time – Winning Time) / Winning Time])

So Driver's Time minus Winning Time, divided by Winning Time, multiplied by 400, that result subtracted from 100.

BTW, changing the "400" number adjusts how far from the winning time your time can be before you get zero points.

Doing a bit of Algebra:
Points = 500-400(DT/WT)
Makes it easier for me, then you reach 0 pts when the winners time is 80% of your time, example:
if DT (Drivers time) is 60 sec and WT is 48 sec then DT/WT---60/48 is 1.25 and

Points = 500 - 400 (1.25) = 500-500 = 0

One of the benefits of running in a PAX index class is the points become a bit closer together due to the ratio getting closer to 1 after calculating the index time.
Using the above example and Bill's CP index and my GP index, I would score 10 pts in CPM but would get a 0 if we were in a non-indexed class....if Bill had won.

George can you specify what is should be? I have the Word document and can update it and create an updated PDF and upload it.
