opinions on MazdaSpeed Protege

so whats the census on the MS Protege.
i've read some stories about the driveline not being very strong. apparently the diff will break if you look at it.
then they say the tranny isnt very strong . but overall , i've read that the FS-DE ,motor is just horrible.
all i remember is that Car and Driver liked the car when it was introduced. so did i . i thought it was supposed to handle well.
basically i have an oppurtunity to trade a 99 miata for a 2003 MSP .
