Changing tires at the track

Post by Arthur Grant »

If you put your race tires on at the track and take them off again before going home, how do you get your tires to the track?

Put them in bags and load them in the car.
Have a friend bring them.
Buy a tire trailer and drive 55 or less there and back.
Buy a truck and trailer and haul it to and fro.
Leave your race tires on for the trip there and back.

Well yes, I have suppose that is pretty much the list short of having your manufacture of choice meet you at the track with a hauler full of product and a tire changing crew. (Don't laugh I know a Ferrari Challenge driver here in the OC that had that). But the real question are advantages. For El Toro events I can have some support, for other the chief pit crew and sponsor a.k.a. wife says I am on my own. For the last event I drove to the event on the V710s I was given. Some told me they were well worn, others told me they were in good shape for practice tires. I can tell you they were much better than my SPT's and I would gladly take more. (I don't see myself buying a new set this year I have overrun my orginal budget buying wheels and committing to buy new street tires). Driving to the event doesn't seem to have hurt them at all. Of course I have no bench mark to know.

I do know on the tire front I am a contraian, I like less air pressure than was recommended in my street tires by a wide margin, and more air pressure in the V710's than was recommended.

As for the tire trailer I own a condo with a one car garage, or storage garage if you like. A trailer likely won't fit, although I am having a hitch put on the vette Tuesday just in case. As for towing the car itself not likely as my most robust vehicle has a 1600lb limit. I own 6 cars for 4 drives in the afore mentioned condo, neighbors don't want to see a dedicated race hauler.

So back to the pro's and cons

Damn, I missed that whole "drive 55" part on the way to Wendover.

You forgot the TireTail. Fits into a trailer hitch and holds 4 tires and you don't have to drive 55. I think Pete has one.

As long as you are on kuhmos, just drive to the events on them.

If your tires stick out of the wheel wells, you might want to do something to keep the thrown grit from sand blasting your fenders.

Have you considered running a street tire class? Leaving the same tires on the car all the time truly reduces the hassle factor, and modern street tires are sooo much better than they used to be.

Doug ... typically the best ST tires aren't available in Vette sizes ... and Vette's tend to not be so much fun on sub par tires

I don't think I can without taking the aftermarket chip out of the engine? I have been running all but my last event with Kumho ECSTA SPT street tires the car runs on every day. If I did run thou it would be with Kumho XS in 285/40/17.

I originally bought mine through an advert. in the back of the Sports Car magazine 4 years ago.
Last I heard, the manufacture guy is not making them anymore.

Try the used markets, sccaforums, craiglist etc.. Sorry for the bad news.

Greg Peng was in your same boat(wanting a tire tail) 4 months ago.

I tried to buy one a few years ago and was turned down---somebody would not take my money!! The reason: around 275's and larger (tire and rim), it is very hard to keep the weight under the recommended 250 lb limit. I got a trailer (now for sale cheap) instead and didn't have jack, stands, tools, etc bouncing around in my car!!

Am really hoping not to have to store a trailer. One car garage condo with 6 cars type problem. However I have to ask for photo and price?

Design looks pretty simple. Bet John at http://betamotorsports.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; could make one for you.
