Warped Rotor ?

Post by Mako Koiwai »

The Miata is making a slight uneven rotational rubbing sound ... noticeable during rolling out. Could this be a warped rotor? How does one know one has a warped rotor?

Want to make sure the Miata is OK for Karen for next weekend's Solo Time Trails at CA Speedway.

Great article ... thanks.

The sound is fairly soft "scrapping" noise ... definitely rotational, and SEEMS to have gotten better since changing out the diff fluid (Royal Purple). When I have the car up and turn the wheels by hand I can't hear anything.

We had a track day cut short because of a bad bearing ... car has new front bearing now ... rear ones show no play.

Noises are a bit difficult to track down - I've been tracking down odd noises (and vibrations/shaking) in my car for the last six months. What I thought had been bad bearings turned out to be a combination of the aggressive tread of the Dunlops and the fact that my last set was shaved. Does the noise diminish as you go faster? Mine goes away at about 60mph. If it does, then it's the tires. If not, then it MIGHT be a bad bearing. If you still have doubts, try a set of 'normal' street tires and see if the noise goes away. BTW, if you need another front bearing, I've got an extra one. ;)

I had a hissing/scraping noise coming from the rear that had been present since the National Tour and replacing the drive axles last week eliminated it. They weren't dead, but they were pretty noisy. That noise was constant and got louder as I went faster.

As soon as there is any engine noise, the noise gets masked ... with our essentially open exhaust. We only hear it at very low speed ... coasting. I think at higher coasting speeds the Toyo R1R or 710's covers up the noise. I'm not that concerned. Karen is ... I sometimes think women hear TOO well. :D

OK, I take it back. Karen's sensitive hearing was Right! I discovered one of the two spring clips keeping the pads off the rotor was missing ... causing one end of the rear right pads to rub ... which one could only hear when doing a low speed coast down.

Harmonics often come go as you go slower/faster making them harder to diagnose.
