Need S2000 clutch replacement recomendations

Post by Darren Cole »

I think it's time to replace the clutch in my S2000 (45k miles). It seems to be slipping in 3rd and 4th gear when power shifting. I would like to keep it SK1 compatible. Are there any upgrades i can make, or does it all have to be OEM? Ever since i had the car, it never seemed to grab that well. It only had 10K and the guy said he babied it.

I'm probably going to have the Honda dealer do it unless anyone has a better recomedation.
Thanks!

since it is a stock category class you do need to replace with oem or oem replacement. What year s2000 is yours? i believe ap2s had clutch delay valves in the slave cylinder designed to protect the drivetrain from "power shifts". I know my 06 has it so i have to take it easy on the 1-2 shift while autocrossing.

I have a 2004 (first year of AP2). I think it does have that delay valve, I've felt that before! (just like the 2003 WRX) The problems i was having were more evident in the 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. It got worse the longer i drove it, but was able to drive it home on the freeway no prob. I wonder if it is possible that delay valve needs adjusted? Honda gave me a $2000 estimate to do it (including new flywheel).

I haven't used them myself, but Evasive Motorsports in La Puente seems to be a pretty popular shop for S2000 parts and service. It should be cheaper than the dealer here.

As long as an S2000 clutch job isn't a whole lot more of a PITA than most cars I'd do it for a whole lot less than $2000!

I've done engines for Tom B, Ken L, Gio J. Transmissions for Tom B, Theo O, Craig N.

Obvious overwhelming support for Eric! Sounds like he does great work.

Eric - I have heard that the S2000 clutch is a much bigger PITA than most cars.

Location is always a problem too, since i'm so far away from the valley.

A friend hypothesized that the clutch delay valve creates more delay with dirty fluid. Not sure if that's the case, but the S2000 does seem to generate a lot of black dust in the clutch reservoir and I could see that stuff gumming things up.

(some) Vette owners change out the fluid in their clutch reservoir after every event. It really goes black ... showing that there is quite a circulation of fluid going on

I'll have to check the reservoir. Last time i looked i think it was a nice gold! The delay does seem excessively long.
