I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but he has learned to fulfill his need for speed with skill. Among his personal aircraft he owns a P-51, and regularly pushes it and others. I work with a host of navy pilots who at various times and places have gotten to fly with him at special events and all claim he is very good. Wouldn't surpise me at all if he was reasonably quick and comfortable in an F-1 car. Of course running hot laps and racing are two different things, but when you feel comfortable above 300 knots flying airplanes in tight formation, might not be that big of jump.
