Wanted: cheap beater/commuter

I'm looking for a car with an automatic transmission and air conditioning that's reasonably cheap to run. Preferably something that can get me to work and back reliably with decent gas mileage. I've got very little pride and don't care to much about the badge or cosmetic appearances. If anyone has a car they are looking to get rid of or know anyone who is, please let me know! I'm thinking $500-$5K but could do more if it's the right match.
