Under the sea...Topeka Update

Post by Steve Ekstrand »

We went for a practice sail this morning. The Civics had barely enough torque to make it back upstream.
Tree and timing failed, first heat practice only.
Flood watches everywhere.
Nonstop rain...

We do this for fun right???

Weather in SoCal is horrible. Some clouds in the sky, might be cool for beach volleyball tomorrow. :)

Seriously, I read they are using stop watches in the afternoon runs. That is sad. I hope they get it sorted by tomorrow and that the runs today will not be the ones people are standing on.

i often take for granted, that other parts of the country don't "suffer" from the same desert / ocean weather we have in socal.

pardon the ignorance - nationals is rain or shine, right?

Sort of. They will not run if lightning, or too heavy a rain (cones moving) or too much wind. Any possible safety issue can shut down the event. They can then abbreviate the event also. But in the end, something will have run.

Weather prediction right now for Nationals is good weather. But the ProSolo (today and tomorrow) is supposed to be all wet.

Not true, I heard that Heat 1, our Annie Bauer, on street tires had TTOD going, stopwatch accuracy of course though.

Remember, Annie's a Nor'wester, so she's used to the wet. Anyone know if she's driving the Vette or Max's car?

i'm guessing the STi. she hasn't had the vette long enough to go to nationals with it? also, the vette would be .. interesting.. in the wet.

Max's car ... Annie posted on NASIOC that they were doing Practice Runs !!! Which seems REALLY unusual on a ProSolo course! I thought her TTD was from the practice session?

Good thing Henry and Ken took SPT Rain Tires, new Victoracer Intermediates besides two sets of new 710's. Theoretically Henry could run the Hoosier wets, but Ken won't ... he's Korean Kuhmo thru and thru, perhaps even more so now.

Morning heats were all practice. With stopwatch timing for most of it.

Afternoon runs are in trouble. Lot of shift A delays, now we are in a hold most of the way through shift B with workers all huddled in the tech building. Bull Mastifs and Norwegian Forest cats are literally dropping out the sky. Carl the groundkeepers is telling people that the heavy stuff is not coming til later, he'd play through..... We're not even half way through with the afternoon runs and its 4:20pm local time. Lot of local flooding. The course isn't that bad. We get much bigger rivers on the pad at Cal Speedway or Qualcomm. Put it sucks all the same.

Parking in the grass blows. I was able to find asphalt. I can't imagine how far down in the mudpit my trailer would be if I hadn't moved.

Annie is in the STI. She has to run STU to keep her L2 points. She has a fantastic chance to take the series. The rain gives her an advantage over Christine with the tougher BSP pax.

They are calling workers back to the course. Deluge ended and its back to slightly more than a drizzle.

They say there is a window of dry about 15 minutes out. I hope they can finish off Shift B before it stops completely or first drivers will be entirely screwed.

Is Ken a contract driver for Kumho? That would preclude running the Hoosiers.

I was pretty sure ... back '06 at the Pro, Ron Bauer had to run on his 710s during Saturday's deluge.

Speaking of rain of biblical proportions, what's it like there?

Results are up for today.

Shockingly, some AWD cars are winning. :)

Is Eric Clements really on Kumhos?

Pretty impressive to only be .063 out of first if true!

Leave it to a girl from the Pacific Northwest to run in the rain. She has had lots of practice.

Holy crap - that was a wet day!! More rain expected tomorrow. Personally, I hope it dumps.

Oh yeah, news update... Aaron Goldsmith is freaking quick in the wet. He would be killing me if he could have put a right side together. Look for him to move up tomorrow if we have similar condition.

STX/STU probably had a about the best conditions, simply because it had not rained hard for about 45 minutes, so at least the course was just wet, not rivers!
