$2500 T5z transmission modified to fit miata+949racing disks

Post by Christos Adam »

If you are tired of breaking your transmission this is for you. This is not a regular T5 but the mythical T5z!

Here what you get:
T5z
+
Modified 5th gear for road racing (this requires a lot of machining - it's not just swap) and fixes the only problem of the T5z - the weak 5th gear
+
2 like new disks for 949 racing clutch but in the T5z spline (if you don't have a 949 clutch you can't use these) reinforced to tolerate hard launches by adding another two puks (total 6)
+
Best gear lever for T5 modified to fit the miata
+
Custom bell housing
+
Custom driveshaft
The transmission needs new syncros (either 2nd or 4th gear I honestly don't remember right now)

I would like to post a few more details regarding the transmission since I'm getting a lot of questions:

This was created by Corky Bell (from Bell engineering) specifically for me. Since the timeline was tight after a a few months Corky sent me the 50% finished product and I continued the evolution with Stan's machine shop.
Corky provided the custom bell housing but also created one of the beefiest transmission brackets in the history of man-kind which allows to fully utilize the miata's PPF.

This photo doesn't really do justice since this bracket literally hugs the transmission all around.

Additionally a second smaller bracket was created for the tail of the transmission which also connects to the PPF.

Stan helped me relocate the shifter to the ideal location:

Then the best shifter in the market was added - a MGW quick shifter. These are considered the best quick shifters in the mustang world - for this application I had to be on the phone with their engineer for a custom shifter since most of the mustang shifter are at an angle.

Many people are asking me what are the ratios and how this is comparing to the miata, please see below for the ratios of the one in the 3rd column (T5z) - except for the 5th which will explain further down:

This specific T5z has modified 5th gear (installed at my machine shop) for Road Racing - this requires machining of the cover for the beefier 5th gear to fit.

Designed for the Ford World Class T5 or any other World Class T5 using a 28 or 23 spline mainshaft. This close ratio 5th speed gear set is designed for road racing purposes and will yield a .81 ratio overdrive with a 2.95 ratio T5 and a .92 ratio overdrive with a 3.35 ratio T5. If you require this gearset in a General Motors T5 you can substitute a Ford mainshaft in place of the GM piece and change your driveshaft yoke. This is a direct retrofit to the weak .80

Design concept:
The factory Ford Motorsport and Cosworth Sierra T5 .80 overdrive set used a gearset with a tooth combination of 33 teeth upper and 53 teeth lower. By creating a new set with less teeth and a .100" larger diameter upper gear, realized strength improves greatly. The new tooth combination of 20 teeth upper and 32 teeth lower yields virtually the same exact gear ratio making it very desirable for road race use.

Chrome Moly (SAE 8620) alloy heat treated for road race applications.
Snug press fit assures concentricity and optimum strength.
Snap ring land is flat ground to maximize load bearing surface area.
Helical cut gears for reduced gear noise when in 5th gear.
Only .100" larger in diameter than factory .80 sets, allows use of stock bearing.

Therefore for my transmission the fifth gear is 0.81
