Well, I'm glad you asked. I think there was a major tire distributor who put a lot of money into our local, divisional event. Money that helped fund this years operations and has helped us not increase fees for how many years in a row now? Oh, and there was a link set up at the bottom of each page where we get kick-backs from purchases. Actual checks. Real money. Money that lets us host a novice school at El Toro. And order new equipment. And finish the CTV. I don't think it was Discount Tire though. I'll need to check my records.

Not countering what KJ stated about our current Tire Rack contributions....

Discount Tire aka Americas Tire, has been involved with SCCA Solo on many levels locally, but it has been a while. One particular store used to provide prefered tire pricing, seminars, donations of products to banquets, and amazing mounting pricing. Unfortunately when that store manager moved locations out of the area, most of that went away. When he move to another store in our general service area again, upper management put a quash on those perks, but he still provides excellent customer service to those of us who still use him for mounting of tires.

Bob, it's the same as if I were to advertise BMWCCA events or PCA (Porsche) events on these forums. We have to protect our investment (Cal Club Solo region) and investors (aka our sponsors) from a financial point of view.

I was just trying to help out other fellow autoxers save $100. during economic hard times. I am not so "parochial" as some others, I guess.

My bad.

In my SCCA home region we (SCCA) get cooperate with PCA and BMWCCA to have a work party to patch the west lot.

As Craig mentioned, Discount Tire (Chino I think) offered up their showroom space for a tire seminar (years ago) when I was just getting started. They had pizza/drinks/raffle etc. It was advertised & coordinated with SCCA. I attended. That's not support?

Maybe some people have short memories or just don't care about old relationships.

I cannot seem to post anything lately that doesn't tick off some people.

Whatever.

If you ever read any of Mako's posts, he has a signature of a quote from our Forums administrator Aaron Goldsmith...."The road to hell is paved with good intentions". Your intentions are good just the execution is bad.

Though that is true but we (each club) fight for every dollar therefore don't advertise their events. You don't see PCA or BMWCCA advertising our events on their forums do you? Just an FYI Bob.

That was in the PAST and that's great that they "did" that (hence past-tense). They are not supporting us now. The Tire Rack is.

Geez, maybe we should just take Bob outback behind the CTV and shoot him at the next event. ;)

While I am a big supporter of Tire Rack and the support they have given to SCCA and our region (my purchases have been in the range of $6000 this year alone), I for one, thank you for the intention of your post Bob and don't feel a public flogging was necessary.

Bob, Thank you for the post.

Many of the discounts / rebates offered by Discount Tire are also offered by Tire Rack, though not every brand of tire is offered by both (Falken comes to mind). I requested that we post the special banners, we didn't at first I see now we have one of the specials listed below now. Maybe refreshes bring others, up just as the banners rotate at the top, I haven't checked.

I'm the one who did the footwork to pull the Tire Rack relationship off... and have used them, and Discount Tire both since setting up the relationship. I'm in no way offended by your post.

I shop with my pocket book first, always have, always will. I'm more than happy to lean to the financial benefit of the Tire Rack relationship all things being equal, but if a better deal lies somewhere else, that's where my money will go that time.

I'm sorry Gio has taken such a rude demeanor about the subject. Again thank you for the post, we don't all feel the way Gio apparently does.

I think Gio forgot how expensive tires get for those of us that races once or twice a month in this current economic environment  Heck, I'm down to buying used practice tires for crying out loud :)

Just messing with you Gio :D

However, rules are rules. We need a brutal moderator that will delete posts that violates rules prompty so that we don't have these kind of discussion over and over again.

I wasn't upset, I was just pointing out that TireRack supports local/national solo programs. Discount tire doesn't (one branch manager did, for a time). Without TR we probably wouldn't have a travelling national Solo program, they give that much.

How much are you saving if Solo fees go up due to TireRack not being as profitable as they were and stop supporting Solo? Is a $100 coupon on select Discount tires any better than a TireRack $100 rebate? I think it would be a false economy to save a $20 on tires and them get stuck with $200 higher entry fees...

Eric, I'm not sure anyone took offense to your prior post, I didn't. I think it was a valid question you posted, while simultaneously being an indirect statement of TR's support of our programs.

I guess where I'm going with this is we have multiple sponsors on the site. I don't believe any of them expect to receive every dollar every member spends on a product they might also offer. I don't think most of them would be offended by someones post about a great deal they found somewhere independently. I don't think any of them would come on to the site and damn of of our members for not choosing them due to their support of our program. I do believe they would hope to be at least considered as an option, and given a opportunity to compete for their business. So why should one of our other members who are not the owners of any of the businesses do the same?

While I disagree with the decision to not allow our members to learn about other opportunities to play with their car on our site, I really hope were not turning into such a dictatorship that we not only limit choices of where to play with our cars, but also where we must spend money to improve our cars too.

Rude? Where was I rude? I know Bob, and I like Bob. Just pointing out what the region wants and doesn't want. I was in no way rude to Bob.

Oh no, quite the opposite. I know EXACTLY how much high-quality STREET tires are (which sometimes can be more expensive than R-Compound tires), and in this economic job environment, why do you think I haven't been out to an event in almost 3yrs? :)

Oh I think they would be offended because they paid to advertise their business on our site. So what's to stop someone else posting "Hey Joe Schmo down the block has $50 window tinting...great deals". I'm sure Toby wouldn't be happy about that.

Kumho is also offering a $100 discount on a "Sport" tire ... available via the TR Link at the bottom of this page, incase you're not interested in the Dunlop Run-Flats.

Good idea to click on the Tire Rack link below once a day to check on the various discounts being offered. ;)

I wonder if Aaron can make the forums in a frame so that the banners atop and bottom are like "headers/footers" frozen but the forums are scrollable. That way we can see the Tire Rack banner constantly.

While the ads at the top are a nice reminder of those that support us through advertising, I base my choice of who I buy from on several things, mostly the recommendations of others who have direct experience. And I have a feeling this is true of many, many others. While the current advertisers are all people I know and trust, do we investigate those that wish to advertise with us to any extent? If Jo Blow's Body Shop said here's my ad and my money do we turn him down if no one in the community can recommend him? Do we turn down someone who has a similar business to one that already advertises with us?

Part of the function of a forum community is to help each other out. If you have a good experience with a business, sharing that is a good thing. If others go there and have similar experiences that business may end up becoming a site sponsor or offering specials for CSCC or SCCA members. When someone asks who should I buy from, there are always several responses and they almost always include the site sponsors if applicable.

Actually, yes - we do. Will and others forward the requests for ad space to me, and I respond as our chairman. Lately we've been getting lots of hits from ad brokers who want to place, for example, insurance links up there. Kinda ironic given that most insurers exclude what we do...

So to directly answer your question Rick: as a region we protect the advertising space for relevant and supporting companies.

That said, I don't think Bob's tip was offensive at all. Thanks Bob!

This post is in the Off Topic section and not Solo specific.
If you are looking for tires and/or rims which TireRack doesn't offer then I see no problem with sharing info on discounts. Truck/SUV rims/tires can be quite expensive.

Only Discount Tire has the triple chrome twenty-sixes for my donk I like.
