Preceded by a big cloud of smoke, while banging on the rev limiter in 2nd ... but car seems to be running fine. Slight 2nd puff of smoke and then nothing. Left back side of car is covered is white powder.
Gary said he's never seen this. I'm guessing a ceramic CAT element pulverized itself?

Raise the car & bang on the dr side cat w/ a dead blow mallet. If you hear tinkle, tinkle cat matrix is toast. You may not hear anything if all the matrix is gone. Also rev car while tapping cat (if you can manage to do this) & see if any pieces fly out the back.
How many miles on it? Year?
Clean it up (except the white powder) & remove all evidence of spirited driving. Drive to dealer. May be covered under emissions extended warranty.
You might go to where the white puff happened & CSI it for debris.
Here's a plug of ceramic CAT cat that blew out of a 275 wheel horse power Mini. But what we saw blow out of the Vette was a BIG cloud of white "smoke," which turns out to probably be powder.
The Z06 in question use to have Nitros ... wonder if that contributed to the CAT's early demise?
They should not run the engine until they check the cats. Broken up catalyst can actually work it's way UP into the engine if the vibrations are just right.

This bothers me, please explain!!!!!
Mako nailed the prob on-site "looks like the cat exploded" checking the cel code showed we had lost the DS cat....just need to find out why, motor may have gone way lean riding the limiter???
thanks for all the input

It is a Corvette, they do this. :unimpressed: The T1 guys killed them so often they got the Club Racing rules changed to allow them to come off. I replaced them twice on my C4. Small cats very close to the header=fail. Replace them now and you should be good for a few years.

But they're used to cars that start when you turn the key.

High flow cats probably will not pass the smog test. They don't clean the air as good as the stock ones.
